Update of my previous two reviews - after 2 years of use (Rating: 5.00)
Review : This is an update of my previous review and prior update. I have had this unit now for almost two years. Overall I am still happy with it. However , with time, a few wrinkles have developed. There are a couple of annoying quirks that we have had to get used to. Occasionally we have a 'scene-Skip' problem playing some DVD's. These are usually the bargain basement type but we have also had the problem with Good quality media, major-release DVD's. And we also see intermittent "artifacts" pop up "momentarily" from time to time.I dont know if this is a genreal characteristic in this particular product or if its just a bug in my own machine. Although a bit annoying, in general they do not cause us all that much trouble. If I had to replace this unit, I would probably look for something cheaper. there really weren't many units like this one on the market two years ago, but now they are easy to find and the selection is fairly good. I would have to say that the $300.00 we paid for it in 2001 is just too much to pay in 2003 - in fact the price has been lowered almost $100.00 since that time, but even $200.00 is a bit much with all the competition in the $150-$200.00 range. Overall a good unit but a little overpriced for the times. Reliability may be a factor here, If the thing is still functioning well ,in two or three years, I would definitely have to say it was worth the extra $$ if that translated into the extended use.
Performed extremely well in both DVD and VCR modes. (Rating: 5.00)
Review : I purchased this unit online, and while waiting for it to ship, I suffered "buyers remorse" due to some of the very low rated reviews at this site. Some people complained bitterly about poor performance in either DVD, VCR, or both. I searched for reviews at additional sites, and found a review from someone who sounded competent and knowledgable, That individual stated that he was happy with his unit, and that it was adequate for his needs. That eased my mind, and I awaited the arrival of my unit. I received my V1000 more quickly than I thought I would have, and it was very simple to hook-up. Due to A/V restrictions on my TV, I made the initial mistake of trying to hook-up both the S-video and RCA connections on my TV's same Line In. This doesn't allow tuner or VCR outputs to be used on that Line In, since I guess S-Video interrupts the RCA connection physically. So now using just the RCA connections, I still have what I consider to be excellent video and audio from the TV / Stereo system in V1000's DVD, VCR, or tuner modes. The remote is somewhat difficult to operate, but the well written manual answers all questions effectively. If you can operate a multi-remote for a digital cable box, then you can figure this one out. The key to successful operation of the remote is being sure to hit either the "DVD", "VCR" or "TV" button to control any function on that unit. This sounds simple, but it is easy to NOT PRESS the correct "unit" button, and then you are headed for trouble. You can then mistakenly change settings, such as volume, on the VCR while trying to change the volume on your TV, if you don't press the "TV" button before changing the volume. That might explain why some reviewers said their remote quit operating. My VCR was nine years old, and while it still worked okay, this new unit has many slick features such as auto-track, and time lines based on hours and minutes instead of just a counter. It also has a 400 times rewind speed that slows at tapes end, so that the tape doesn't break or stretch. I am very happy with this unit's operation on both DVD and VCR modes. Reliability is unknown, and this is the first Samsung product that I've owned, so time will tell. As to some folks receiving units DOA, I once received a broken Microtek X6EL scanner. Microtek apologized for the inconvenience, quickly exchanged the unit for me, and the second unit has taken over 8,000 scans in three years, so maybe the second unit for you will be a winner. And, don't forget to operate the remote correctly; maybe the unit is okay and the problem is the "operator"!
Not long lasting. (Rating: 2.00)
Review : We purchased our combo about 1 year ago. The price was outstanding being that you get both the dvd and vcr. Well, it now won't play the dvd's. The company has offered to fix it for a "nice" fee, which turned out to be more than we paid. So needless to so we will now have a combo piece and a seperate DVD player. Not so convienant anymore.
Good buy, good pic and sound, convenience (but VCR's loud) (Rating: 4.00)
Review : This is a terrific unit and a good value for money. The good stuff: I was able to throw away my CD player, my VCR and my MP3 player and I got a DVD player with it all in one nice slim package. I can watch DVDs while recording TV programs with the VCR! The DVD picture quality and sound is great, although I find the DVD slow to respond to commands from the remote. The bad stuff: One flaw though (and I read this from other people too) the VCR is loud. The motors inside make a lot of noise when playing back tapes or recording. This is especially annoying if you have the VCR in your bedroom and you're recording some late night program when you usually sleep.
Worked well for a year (Rating: 2.00)
Review : I bought this unit to replace a VCR in our bedroom. Worked well for just over one year, before the tape loading mechanism failed. The local electronics shop could not fix it, and recommended sending it to the manufacturer for service. Of course, it was out of warranty by six weeks! Never did get it fixed. The good news is that our credit card company had an extended warranty program, that doubled the manufacturers original warranty. They just sent us a check for the full purchase price! Time to shop for something new. Remote is a bit complicated to use, not very intuitive. Picture and sound quality were okay. Given my experience with this product, I'd be hesitant to buy from them again.
