Better, but not the best (Rating: 3.00)
Review : Perhaps it was an oversight by another reviewer but the blade on this knife is retractable. ...the knife will not accept blades and the quick change system does not work. I'll admit that it takes some getting used to but it does work relatively well; in fact it could be touted as a built in safety feature - if you can't figure it out, you probably shouldn't be playing with sharp objects. That aside, the knife is decent but there are some drawbacks. It is cumbersome and inconvenient to retrieve blades from the flip down storage handle compartment. The plastic storage handle/grip is slick and the very thought of using a slippery material for the handle goes against all common sense. Use 60-100 grit and rough it up. The push button for quick blade changes is made of plastic (engineered obsolesence) and the engagement is not as posative and predicatable as on the Craftsman. By the way, the aluminum Craftsman version of the Stanley 10-499 is the best I've used. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any more.

Stanley 10-788 (Rating: 5.00)
Review : I work in a warehouse and I need a good Box-Cutter, and of all the Box-Cutters I have owned and used, this one is by far the best. First off; you don't need any tools to change the blade, and the knife holds about 6 blades in its handle which conveniently drops down. It takes me all of 20 seconds to change the blade, even less time if I am only changing which half of the blade sticks out. Another nice thing is that it is meaty and it has a rubber like material on the top side which gives you a grip that is un-real, so it feels secure and comfortable in your hand whether you're wearing gloves or no gloves. Trust me when I say that this knife will not slip out of your hands, gloves or no gloves. It has a string cutting feature, but I have not used it so I will not comment on it. I have used the Knife for over two months now, and it has fallen off shelves, boxes, etc..... onto the cement floor (sometimes from as high as 7 or 8 feet) all I ever do is just pick it up cause nothing comes loose on it, and the knife still looks new. The Stanley 10-788 is truely a great utility knife, it is not a knife you will be replacing anytime soon, as long as you don't let anyone borrow it.

The new Lenox Knife is better (Rating: 2.00)
Review : I tried the Stanley knife and the Lenox knife. The blades in the Lenox knife cut better and do not break even in tough jobs. Buy the Lenox knife - you will love it.

Easy to use nice grip (Rating: 4.00)
Review : It only took a few seconds to read the instructions on how to remove a blade from storage and then load it in the knife. The only grip I have is the blade is a little loose. But it is an easy no tools required blade change, and if you don't mind the blade being a little loose I would highly recommend them

Excellent Utility Knife but not quite Instant Change (Rating: 4.00)
Review : The grip of this curved utility knife melds with the contours of the hand very well, making it a much more comfortable to use and easier to control. My only misgiving of the tool is that it is not exactly "instant change" as the title might indicate. You retrieve a spare blade from a swing down compartment below the knife, then put it through the front opening while pressing down on a button. It is an improvement over the "unscrew the body" method but I still find myself fumbling with the blade. Nonetheless, a fine utility knife for any shop. Too bad I can't give it 4 1/2 stars.

Heavy and uncomfortable (Rating: 3.00)
Review : I am a packer/shipper and use a box cutter/utility knife all day long. I have used the Stanley 10-499, the aluminum Craftsman version of the 10-499, and the recently the Stanley 10-788. The Craftsman is by far the best. I have been to Sears 4 times now looking for a replacement for my warn out one but without luck. The workers at Sears have no clue if the item has been discontinued or what. During an online search for new one I found the 10-788. The 10-788 does the job but at the same time is uncomfortable and very heavy. (I really liked the weight of the aluminum Craftsman since I have to carry the knife all day long.) This would be a good knife if I didn't have to use it as much and didn't have to carry it around. LOOK FOR THE CRAFTSMAN.
