Get it if you can find it for a good price. (Rating: 3.00) Review : I brought the E740 1 month ago for a very good price. If you are looking for a wi-fi enabled PDA, but don't want to spend too much on it, take a look at the E740. I read most of the reviews on Amazon and other opinions site, most people have negative opinions on the E740. Their opinions are understandable, since they got it for a very high price, and the performance does not match its price tag. After I using it for over a month, here are some of the pros and cons in my opinion on the E740. Pros: CF(compatible with both type I/II) and SD slot. It really offers you a lot of upgrade options with both the CF and SD slot. I personally use a 512 SD card and leave the CF slot for a 56K cf modem. User replaceable battery Cons: It crashes, but in my opinion is is acceptable. It doens't crash all the time, but occasionally. THis is pretty much it. In term of battery life, I think most other Windows based PDA offer identical battery life. (Well, except some big PDAs like Dell X5, it offer better life, but it's very bulky) I think the PDA deserve anywhere from 50%-60%, since it does offer a lot of features, and at a relatively low price. So if you can find a E740 for a reasonable price, it will be a great gaget to have. Now for the 740, I like the unit a lot. So here is what I give a thumbs up to: The size and weight is about the same as my old Palm. The color screen is great. Indoors and out it works well. Having a compact flash and smart media slot is the only way to go. Here's are the thumbs down: The built in speaker is a joke (but who really expects audiophile sound from a PDA anyway. So plan on buying a set of headphones). The voice record button on the side of the unit is way to easy to set off without knowing it (this runs down the battery and gives you a bunch to screwy recording to delete). The main manual is terrible, there is no index in the back to cross reference anything so if you have a problem good luck. Last but not least, the battery life is only average, so if you travel, do yourself a favor and buy a back-up charger. Overall, I'd recommend this PDA. The features are better than the iPaq. And, you've got to wonder, how long has anybody ever effectively competed with Microsoft. I was a diehard Mac guy and also and owner of a Beta VCR, neither could effectively compete with stronger rivals. This time I didn't want to be the last guy swimming up stream. Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba All in all, it's been frustrating to see poor reviews and then see Toshiba not support the e740 any more. However, with proper management, you can get a WiFi enabled PDA with SD/CF slots for cheap and be pretty satisfied with yourself! |
