A Prophet (Rating: 5.00) Review : This video is one I have watched countless of times and will watch it again and again. (I wish it was available on dvd so that the quality would not deteriorate). The words of Peter is that of a prophet, when I watch this video, I always click to the bible on King David. Somehow they seems to be very similar. The concert clips are the best. Intriguing and eerie (Rating: 5.00) Review : This is the most in depth documentation on the great Peter Tosh I have ever seen. It is almost eerie to listen to the tapes Tosh had been making and how prophetic they were. It shows Tosh for what he really was, a revolutionary, a visionary, and a reggae master!! The interviews with friends and relatives give this documentary credibility from the roots of Tosh's past. One truly gets a sense of where Peter came from, and after all that's half the story. Revolutionary Documentary of the Life of Peter Tosh (Rating: 5.00) Review : Peter Tosh is a spiritual leader, gifted musical visionary, and an unapologetic revolutionary, who along with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer created and popularized ROOTS Reggae music. This video, along with his audio diary (The Red X tapes, discovered four years after his murder)tell his life story.Included in the video is his own personal audio diary, interviews with Peter, interviews with his family, friends, and bandmates, early home movies with Bunny Wailer, and Bob Marley and of course lots of his music and concert footage. "Stepping Razor" cuts a convincing slice of life... (Rating: 4.00) Review : An unflinching and unexpectedly moving portrait of musician Peter Tosh. This is not your typical "rockumentary", as it delves more into the political and spiritual aspects of its subject as opposed to the the usual formula of concert footage + backstage drama. One minor criticism, (personal pet peeve) is the director's over-use of the "JFK" style inter-cutting of real footage with actor portrayals to illustrate some events; but this will not distract most viewers. There are also a few dubious statements made (and presented as fact);specifically, the insinuation that Tosh was the the real leader and force behind the Wailers and that Bob Marley was just a puppydog-like follower. Like the Beatles or other groundbreaking bands,I think it was more of a symbiotic blend of two (or more) massive talents that made the Wailers such a powerful influence. Nitpicks aside-- this is required viewing for reggae fans! This video is a combination of music video/horror/drama (Rating: 5.00) Review : I was lucky to see this documentary at a theater in 1993. I was even luckier to buy the film later that year. Anyone interested in the most powerful musician (lyrically, consciously, philosophically, musically) MUST see this film, which was predicated on autobiographical audio tapes created by Peter Tosh just prior to his vicious murder in Jamaica. If you ever need to be rejuvenated as to your purpose in life, watch this documentary. You will be inspired by a man who took it upon himself to improve the lives of poor people all over the world. His unhypocritical allegiance to the creator was refreshing. His intensity was amazing. His courage was absolutely stunning. His arrogance added to his mystique. His playfulness added to his complexity. This film contains concert scenes, recreations of his life, interviews with important figures in the Jamaican music industry, footage of Jamaican life, and more. |
