| PNY Verto AGP 4x GeForce4 Ti 4200 Video Card From Amazon (US) for $45.99 WITH DVI/TV OUT NO REPLACEMENT From TechDepot for $154.95 |
PNY Verto geForce 4 Ti 4200 64 MB (Rating: 4.00) Review : I have to admit I do like to play computer games, but I am not what you would consider a hardcore gamer. I bought this card to replace my MSI geForce 3 Ti 200 card. There was nothing wrong with that card but I am into other things as well and this card allowed me to use a dual monitor setup, while at the same time post decent results in 3d intensive applications. Using nVidia's nView software, I can spread my desktop over two monitors and use two different applications on separate monitors at the same time. This was the high point for me. (This is also handy for surfing the web. When you enter a site that has annoying pop-ups, they get sent to the other monitor and do not disrupt your surfing.) This function is greatly overlooked by people who buy it. Sure, Unreal Tournament 2003 flies with this card, but it was by no means a slouch on the geForce 3. If you are into games, this video card will definitely not disappoint, if you are more into desktop applications like Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, then this card is seriously overkill... For the same price you can pick up a geForce 4 MX card (excellent card for just running office software, the internet, etc., also supports dual monitors) and an extra 128 MB RAM. Also, the lifetime warranty is a big selling point. There have been other reviewers claiming problems with PNY products and getting horrible customer support, but I honestly can't comment on this since the card has run fine since I bought it. The reason I give it only 4 stars (4.5 really) instead of 5 is that the card comes with no S-video cable for connecting to a TV, and no DVI to VGA converter (these are minor points since you can buy these things separately for a few bucks apiece), but for the 170 smackers I paid for it, this should be included. Also, for any hardcore gamers, this card comes with NO games or demo software, sorry. My system: PNY's card I had for 1yr and 1 month and then it crapped out. Part of the reason I bought the card was to have the lifetime warranty. At first it was great. OK, "great" is an overstatement as you have loop yourself through their "auto help" 800 # menuing system and figure out which bucket your problems belongs in... However, after calling several times and listening to advice on problems that had nothing to do with mine... I got a nice friendly, courteous, somewhat harried customer service person who gave me the instructions on how to process my RMA. I eagerly sent out the card in hopes I'd get it back before end of Xmas break so I could continue playing Knights of the Old Republic. Isn't that the reason we all pay more than $40 - so we can do something cool with our cards like play games or watch DVDs?? 2 weeks goes by.. I write them an email thru their RMA website asking for status. I get some canned reply. Another couple weeks go by and I get the same canned reply saying its out of stock and the should have it next week. Another couple weeks go by... You get the picture... It is now mid FEBRUARY and I still haven't gotten my card nor any notice of when I might get its replacement. PNY might make decent cards but thye sure shouldn't promise something they aren't willing to honor. It's one to tell me upfront.. but another to make me wait over 2 months and just kinda lead me along WITHOUT A GRAPHICS CARD... ggggrrrrr Pay for the card.. don't pay for the service. Cuz you aren't going to get it. The Card I'd give 3 (as in average. If I'd known about the customer service issues I'd have just gotten a card form another manufactuere who didn't promise Lifetime Warranty). Customer Service -3 (as in.. it sucks.) This card has enabled me to play Neverwinter Nights on my old PIII-500 (512 mb RAM), and it looks *stunning*. It's not the highest dollar card, but for my money, it's just what the doctor ordered! |
